What is SEO and On-Page SEO?
SEO is a simple process of optimizing your content for search engines and increasing its authority by solving user problems. It is a process of creating quality content that is liked by the Search Engine and the reader. In SEO we have to create content that is relevant to the search query. In simple terms, SEO is a process of bringing organic free traffic to your site.
Any content is ranked in the SERP after being analyzed by the Search Engine on many factors, Known and Unknown. But What I consider the most important factors which would help search engine rank your content on the result page are:
- Relevancy: In this, the search engine determines ‘ How Relevant are you content to the user query?’ To make your content relevant to the user you need to know what your user needs? What is your user trying to find? What his problem is? To know all that you need to understand your user. - Authority: Authority of your content is determined by the quality of your content. Search Engines scans your post for keywords, headings, bolded text. These all help the search engine determine the quality of the content. Search engines are getting smarter and smarter day by day. you cannot fool them by stuffing unnecessary keywords and creating irrelevant content. You have to create quality content to rank higher on Google.
- User Signal: This is one of the most important signals that the search engine sees. How the user is interacting with your content. Is the user leaving comments, sharing your content, spending time on your site? The search engine sees all these user signals just to determine how much your content is liked or disliked by the user.
So now we move forward to On Page SEO.
As we discussed SEO is a process of getting organic traffic on your site. We can do it by optimizing our content and make better relations. When we do it by optimizing our content, which is on our site then it is called On-Page SEO. In other words, when we are doing something on our website to improve the search engine rating, it is called On-Page SEO.
So now we know that there are factors that we can improve on the website and of the website to improve the SEO of the website and thus increase the traffic on the website. The stuff we change on our website is On-page SEO and the stuff do not do on our website to improve our ranking and increasing the traffic on our website is called Off-Page SEO. So what is that makes on-page SEO and Off-Page SEO different
On-Page SEO v/s Off-Page SEO
In Onpage SEO we have a fixed set of rules that work for us. Like improving the title, Meta description, Keyword density, etc. But in Off-page SEO we have no defined rules. Off-Page SEO is doing everything off the website which is mostly creating links. You can create backlinks, create guest postings, or get interviewed. These are the most basic ways to do your off Page SEO.
So now you must be asking which is more important off-page SEO or On-Page SEO. On-Page SEO is something that you can do now to improve your site’s SEO but you will see the results in the coming time. Whereas Off-page Seo is something that takes time. Creating links with other sites, asking for backlinks, getting other people to publish a guest post written by you, etc..
Well, Both are important where On-Page SEO can be done quickly and Off-page SEO takes time. And as far as the results are concerned Off-Page SEO gets results faster and On-Page SEO get result with time.
You can say you have to be patient in both the ways.
Why is On-Page SEO Important?
Now you know what is On-page SEO and Off-Page SEO and how they are different from each Other. So let’s try and understand why SEO is important for you.
On-Page SEO is improving the signals that our website sends to the search engine. On-Page SEO helps the search engine understand what we are offering and this in turn helps the search engine rank our content in the Result Page. With the help of On-Page SEO, we can improve the signals like adding a heading, improving meta description, improving our pictures, keyword density, and many more. Each of the points will help the search engine understand what the content is about.
These signals also help the search engine understand the relevancy of the content we have created. The more the content is relevant to the keyword the better position your content will get online in the SERP.
So lets talk about the techniques i recommend to improve your on-page SEO
On-Page SEO techniques
The title is the first thing anyone sees when they open your page. What I do is that I always write 5-10 different titles to choose from which one is most appealing. Which title will tie the reader to the page?
Other than that I recommend that we keep a title between 60-80 words. A title longer than that will just not be appealing to the reader.
Another thing to remember while creating the title of the article is that try and start it with the focus keyword. This will help you improve the SEO of the article.
This is because when the search engine crawls your webpage it will not read the complete article. The search engine will try to understand the article from the heading, sub-headings. Having the Focus keyword in the heading will help the search engines understand the article and thus improve the ranking of the article.
A meta description is a text that we see in the SERP under the title of the page. The picture below helps you understand what is the meta description.
Meta Description is a small summary that helps the reader understand what is there in the article. A searcher sees the meta description and decides whether he wants to go to your page or not.
A meta description should be between 140-160 characters. This is the ideal size for the meta description. Another thing that you should try is adding the focus keyword and synonyms of the keyword in the meta description.
Again this helps the search engine and the user to understand what is on your page. What is it related to or about what have you written? This helps the user and the search engine understand your content before reaching to your content.
The slug is that part of the URL that you edit when writing a new article in WordPress. The following images help you understand what slug is.
To SEO optimize a slug try thee things.
- Keep the slug as small as possible.
- Try adding the focus keyword.
- A slug should tell briefly what the article is all about.
Thats it. You slug is optimized for SEO.
A keyword is the most important part of content marketing. A keyword is user intent. A keyword is your answer to user problems. A keyword should be used as a number of times in the content. Because if we overstuff a keyword then it is considered as Black Hat SEO and if we do not feed the keyword enough times then the search engine may not consider it valuable content for the reader’s search intent.
You should add Keywords or synonyms of keywords in the content. And the percentage of the keyword should be between 1.6 to 2%. Means for every thousand words we should have our focus keyword or synonyms a minimum of 16 to 20 times.
Focus Keyword plays a very important role in ranking the content at the top positions. And placing the keywords at the right place is more important than the keyword itself. Keyword should always be placed at the following positions for optimizing the On-Page SEO:
- SEO Title
- Begining of the Blog
- H1 Title
- Meta Description
This is something you should always cross check before publishing a new content on your blog.
Valuable content should be something that provides some value to the reader and it should not be a copy. Creating valuable content is very necessary but creating unique content is more important. Always try and create unique and fresh content. You can always read other articles but use them as inspiration but to copy them.
To rank higher in the search engines it is very important that you have fresh and unique content. A copy and repeated content are not appreciated by the user and the search engine. Most search engines check the uniqueness of the content and the value they are providing before ranking the content in the SERP. If the content is a copy or is not providing any value to the reader then the search engine would never rank it on top positions.
H1 and H2 Tags
According to a survey, 80% of the readers only skim your website for the headings. This means only 2 out of 10 people read the complete content. So now you have to ask yourself How can we increase the number. So you have to create some wonderful headings which force the reader to read the complete content.
This increases the user engagement time on your article and thus improving the article authority in the eyes of the search engine. So better the titles and heading mean improved user engagement time on your blog.
Alt Image Text
When you add an image in the article. There is an option of Alt Text. This text is displayed when the image is not displayed due to any reason. This text should explain what the image is about. Search Engine scans the image for the image Alt text and tries to understand what the image is.
To further improve the SEO you can also try and insert the keyword in the alt image text of 2 or 3 images. This further increases the authority of your content for the ranking keyword.
Outbound links are those which will redirect the reader to other web pages outside your blog. The basic purpose of inserting the outbound links is to provide extra value to the reader. SO the question is how many outbound links should you insert in an article?
I would recommend that you insert a minimum of 2 to 3 outbound links in a 3000 words article. If you can do more then it’s ok but tries don’t do less than that.
It does not matter that the reader is redirected outside your blog. The thing that matters is that you are providing some extra value to the reader. And the search engine likes that. The only thing to keep in mind that the anchor text that is redirecting the reader outside the blog should not have your focus keyword. This is a must to remember the rule.
Internal Links are the links that redirect the reader to the other web page or article of your own blog. Again the purpose is the same, to provide extra value to the reader by the content published by you on the related topic. And again the number of internal links should be a minimum of 8 to 10 for a 3000-word article.
And unlike outbound links try and and use keyword for the anchor text for the internal links.
The above said rules are basic help you can get from us. They are not some set rules which are sure to help you. In Digital marketing experimenting is the most important rule. Experiment with these rules and you will get different results. You can also create your own rules which get you results.

There is no harm in using some help. In WordPress, we use tools that are called plugins. Plugins add some additional functionality to your WordPress site. Every plugin has its own functionality. It’s just like installing new software in the windows. So there are some plugins that will help you improve the functionality of your website for the SEO part.
There are many plugins that offer a same job, but I am discussing only the ones that i use on my blog. So here are the plugins which I use to improve the On-Page SEO of my blog.
A3 Lazy Load: This plugin helps by improving the visuals for faster loading on the user device. It only loads the images that are in the screen area of the user. If an image is not on the screen area of the user, this plugin will not load it. This reduces the page load time and hence improving the SEO score of the web page.
Autooptimize: This plugin helps to optimize the CSS, JS, Images, Google fonts, and more. This again helps in improving the speed of your website.
Rank Math SEO: This is a very handy plugin. I like it very much. This plugin helps you with SEO in many ways. It helps you improve the readability of the content, reminds you to add internal, external links, etc. This plugin helps to change the meta description, and keywords, and many more to your web page.
SMUSH: SMUSH is a wonderful tool that helps you reduce the size of the images without compromising on the quality of the image. This plugin will automatically reduce the size of the image without spending time on it.
W3 Total Cache: The highest-rated and most complete WordPress performance plugin. Dramatically improve the speed and user experience of your site. Add browser, page, object and database caching as well as minify and content delivery network (CDN) to WordPress.
